The Humanscale Freedom is the executive chair with no levers. Designed by Niels Diffrient in 1999, it replaced the tension dials, tilt locks and lumbar knobs of a conventional task chair with a mechanism that uses your own body weight to set the recline, a backrest that pivots to follow your spine, and arms and a headrest that move with you as you lean back. Sit down and the chair is already set; get up, and it is set for the next person too. The New York Times called it the gold standard in office seating, and it is held in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

This listing is the Freedom Headrest in Ticino leather in Glacier (white) with white stitching over contoured foam cushions, on a polished aluminium frame with graphite trim, with standard Duron arms and standard castors (Humanscale model F212ATL13WFSHNSC), held in our Sydney warehouse and available to sit in at our Pyrmont showroom.

What makes the Freedom different

The weight-sensitive recline is the heart of the chair. Lean back and the seat and back move together through up to 20 degrees, with the resistance set by how much you weigh rather than by a spring you have to wind. The mechanism is self-locking, so the chair holds whatever position you stop in, and Humanscale designs it for users from 45 to 136 kg. The dynamic headrest has 125 mm of height adjustment; once set, it follows the backrest so your head and neck stay supported in any posture. The synchronous arms mount to the back frame rather than the seat, so they recline with you, and they adjust through 150 mm of height with one hand. Contoured cushions with a waterfall front edge and a coccyx cut-out spread your weight rather than concentrating it at the tailbone, and the seat depth adjusts from 415 to 470 mm.

Overall height 1090 to 1345 mm, overall width 690 mm, chair weight 22.3 kg; Humanscale sizes the chair for people from 152 to 193 cm tall and certifies the structure to 180 kg. The Freedom is GREENGUARD Gold and level 2 certified, and Living Product Certified with a Net Positive designation. Humanscale warrants it for 15 years of 24/7 use; under Humanscale's published terms, upholstery, cushions, arm pads and castors are covered for 5 years and the rest of the chair for the full 15.
